EXIF Date Changer 1.1

Publisher:Rellik Software
Install:Install and Uninstall

Publisher's Description:

EXIF Date Changer - Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) data is stored within JPEG images. Almost all digital cameras record and store the cameras settings, scene information, date/time the photo was taken etc within this EXIF data. This information can be really useful when it comes to sorting and viewing your digital photos, providing you keep the date and time settings of your camera up to date. While traveling this rarely happens, making the date/time values useless.

EXIF Date Changer modifies the date and time attributes of the EXIF data in your digital photos. This allows you to compensate for incorrect camera settings, or different time zones within seconds. As an added bonus you are also able to rename all photos to include the time taken in the filename, making it even easier to sort and view your photos.

Version 1.1 from 2007-03-31

EXIF Date Changer was very easy to use and successfully changed the time on my 2000 pictures allowing me to geotag them.
I couldn't have written a program to meet my needs more precisely.

It was great but one of Vista problems showed up! first off Vista showed the wrong "date taken" time (off by 1 hour) and then date chager changed to the wrong time. However date changer worked perfectly on Win 7. After much research, I found that Vista is known for showing the wrong EXIF time under some conditions.

Does what it says. Simple, convenient user interface that can allows (off)setting date and time on single files and batches. Also changes filename to include date and/or time and adds caption or copyright to EXIF-tags.
Well worth the money.

I forgot to adjust my camera's time after returning from Europe and took some pictures on a climbing trip that I wanted to merge with others taken by a relative. Sort by date was wacked out. EXIF Date Changer enabled me to adjust my pictures' time so that they would interleave properly with the others. Just the trick I needed. I also appreciate the simple installation process.

amazing little program. I've searched all over the net and could not find anything so effective. I use a mac, and this was still the best solution. I have two cameras and they were not synced even though i used them for the same event.

EXIF Date Changer is just what I needed.
After a holiday in Egypt I found that my wife and I had different times set on out camaras, so when we combined the images and sorted by date the two sets of picture were out of sync by 2 hours.
Quickly fixed be using EXIF Date Changer on one set before combining them in a single directory.

The program changed the "date photo created" successfully, but then changed the "date modified" which was disappointing. I was hoping all other info would remain unchanged. Not a huge shortcoming, but I thought I'd mention it.

I tried to modify the time stamp (+1h) of several files in one directory (about 200 files).
I also used the option to modify the file name to YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss + optional filename.
But in some cases it failed to do as intended.
Is there a bug when to much files are selected ?

Downloaded and started, but did not use -- from the looks of the interface and the comments of others, I'm fairly certain it does what is advertised, but my problem is that I realized things were wrong "half way through my trip" and reset the camera at that point - it looks like this does the whole folder, so if I run it against my photos, half will be corrected and half will be un-corrected (into the future...)

Is the source code available? I'd like to incorporate some checks so as to only process files with dates outside of realistic values (in my case, the "bad" dates were 2005, though my trip was last week...)

I'll also second the option for having the program do the calculation for you based on a "reference" photo (I have a photo of my GPS showing the time, which I figure will be the best bet for correcting per that "offset", but I don't want to wrap my brain around calculating years, months, days, hours, minutes AND seconds between some time in 2005 and 8:17am on the 21st)

Perhaps Chage (2009-03-01 23:27:55) could be coaxed into sharing the application he wrote (a link on a free hosting service; or a simple web page with download link). I for one would be curious to try it out. I guess I'm hoping I'm not the only person with my particular 'requirements'. If somebody has preceded me, it can save me having to write something from scratch. Elia

Works as instructed. Very neat little program that does exactly what I wanted it to do - and does so quickly (even though copying the actual photos files in the process).

Few improvements:
Default should probably be keeping the file names intact, and it would be fun if one could change the default folders. Now it looks in "My Documents" every time it starts.

Two VERY MINOR comments. Not a bad program at all (used Exifer in the past, but that is not very user friendly when it comes to batch change the time stamps on jpeg photo files). Hence, I now have a new favorite.

And, I ran my batches on XP Pro. No idea how this little program would perform under Vista or Win7.

Another EXIF Date offset application

I started out looking for batching processing of date time taken for my photos. I tried this and it works but sometimes it has file locking issues and seems a little unstable. It is free so I wont ask for more.

I ended up developed my own application to do more than that. Batch EXIF date time offset, batch EXIF insertion, batch watermarking etc.

It works, but at least one problem

Likes: Graphical user interface; seems to change the exif date

Dislikes: It actually copies the files from one location to another
which means it is fairly slow. (The fact that it leave the original
intact, I admit, could be considered a good thing)

Bugs/Problems: It somehow seems not to close all the files in the
source directory. I was unable to delete the source directory until I
rebooted. (Yes, I killed the application. I also tried logging out.)

Offset date difficult to localize

While I got the tool to set the correct date in the end it took longer than I expected because I was presented with dates in the 1900's. I had a false date for a group of files in 2050 and needed to get this to a specific date in 2008. Not as easy as I had imagined. A shame the interface offers only an offset. Best would be if it was from the system date.

My cell phone does not write EXIF date/time data - which I need to geo-code my photos. I would like to see the EXIF date changer support writing the EXIF date/time based on the creation/modification time of the file.

Great tool

Does as it says. I didn't care for the default settings since I was just changing the EXIF time by one hour (forgot to set the clock back for fall), and I wasn't renaming the files. I also thought having an installer for such a simple app was unnecessary and requires more of the user.

Other than that, works like a charm.

It's amazing that this feature isn't included in larger photo apps.

I wanted to adjust the date to 30 years in the past (scanned pictures), so then it is difficult to calculate the number of days it had to be returned.

Didn`t seem to work under Vista?

I downloaded and installed it just fine, but when I tried it on a few sample photos (which I'd copied to a safe place), I never saw it update the EXIF dates. (Although I DID discover that you can update the EXIF data -- and in bulk -- directly from Vista's explorer interface, which solved my particular issue.)

Since it didn't appear to do anything, I can't really give it a good rating, I'm afraid.

Worked as needed - quick and simple

After a recent trip, I discovered my point and shoot was off by one day and one hour. This meant that photos from my different cameras were not arranged chronologically. This simple little program let me change exactly what I needed to change quickly and without any fuss. My only problem came when it didn't remove the date from the original file name, so I now have 2 dates in the file name. Excellent, simple program.

Exif Date Changer

After some experimentation, found program simple and easy to use for changing the exif date. I have no need to use this program to change the title or add a date to the file name. For my purposes I will make "Destination" the same as the "Source," recurse folders so as to include sub-folders and ignore all the other options. Would like to be able to drill down and make changes to specific pictures vs a complete folder. Also wish I could add a date where none currently exists.

Any way to make a contribution by check or credit card?

Quite good but...

It really did the trick. I had to sort around 800 pictures from the same trip, taken with three different cameras, by photo time. And camera clocks differed around an hour each, and no one had the correct time. The EXIF DC 1.1 program made it quite easy for me to batch solve this problem, most of the pictures was correctly set after running the program. But... there were often some pictures that got a time AND DATE CHANGE! that didn't match the mission requested. The problem appeard over and over again so I had to fix the EXIF misstakes "by hand". Though I'm glad I found this program I can't give it at better grade than 3 out of 5.

Irwan.djajadi 2008-06-07 23:11:55 #

does the job, but could be better

1. It'd be cool to be able to modify the files in place, instead of having to create a separate output folder/files
2. It would be helpful to have a dialog box to help fill in the time delta. Maybe given 2 times, it can calculate the time delta automatically.
3. It would also be helpful to have command line capability so we can use it in batch files instead of having to click buttons.

Author's Response:
You can already do the first one providing that you do not have it also change the filename. I'm looking at adding in your other 2 suggestions. Hopefully in the next few weeks.

I'm looking for a tool that just sets the time and date for a whole folder of jpg's to a date and time selected by me.

I find the calculation of days, hours, etc. confusing and hard to always get right.

It wiped both my input and output folders completely and put my original files in another folder, and they took some finding.

I have removed the program from my PC

Author's Response:
This application is not about setting a fixed date and time to all the photos in a folder. Its about adjusting the date and time on each photo to compensate for wrong times set on your cameras. For example when your traveling and forget to update the time on the camera.

After some investigation it looks like the output folder was set to a protected folder within Vista, causing windows to store the data in a virtual folder. This is why you were unable to find the updated files. I am looking at putting in some extra checks to try and stop this from happening in the future.

DonP 2008-04-03 14:57:07 #

Date Calculation

I found the program a little difficult to accurately calculate the elapsed time necessary to have the date changed as I desired. Usually it took several tries which was cumbersome due to having to delete the "Output" file in which the new images were placed. It would be nice if it had a way to "test" the answer before actually making the change. Alternatively, give it the original time shown on an image, then the time you wish it to read, and let the program calculate the differential to use.

Author's Response:
Thanks for your feedback. I completely agree with it taking several tries to get the correct time. I will look at adding in an option to select a file and set the date/time and then have the program work out the difference.
